FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about BG Bike School?
Explore our FAQs

Can I book a private coaching session for my child?

Yes, provided we have availability. Please contact us directly arrange private coaching sessions for both children and adults.

What is the cancellation or refund policy?

Barring any extreme weather events, our Term Programs and Ride Camps will run rain or shine. In the unlikely event of Bike Glendhu having to cancel the event, we will do our best to reschedule the camp, otherwise a full refund will be provided. If you would like to cancel your spot, we will do our best to fill it, however if we cannot find another participant, no refund will be provided.

What if bookings are full?

Our Term Programs and Ride Camps fill up quickly! If registration shows as full, you can join the waitlist by contacting us directly. We’ll reach out to you right away if a space opens up.

Can parents watch or join in?

Parents are welcome to check in at drop-off and pick-up. However, during sessions, we will be up on the trails and encourage kids to ride independently – it helps build confidence and camaraderie in the group.

Is my child safe on the trails?

Safety is built into every session at Bike Glendhu, from coach-to-rider ratios to trail choice and equipment checks. Our coaches are trained First Aid responders and follow strict internal safety protocols to ensure every ride is both fun, and secure.

What happens if it rains?

For both our Term Programs and Ride Camps, we will ride rain or shine when conditions are safe.

If weather becomes unsuitable (heavy rain, high winds, park closure), sessions will be rescheduled or session refunds issued.

Is lunch or other food provided?

Our Term and Holiday Programs do not include food or snacks. Kids are welcome to visit Velo Cafe on-site at Bike Glendhu pre- or post- their session to refuel.

Please send your child with snacks and water.

For future full day Ride Camps, we will look to have an option to add a packed-lunch upgrade when booking.

What will my child be doing during the camp?

A Term Program or Ride Camp session usually includes MTB skills coaching on progressive terrain, incorporating group rides and bike games that build trail awareness, balance, and teamwork.

Please refer to the Term Program or Ride Camp schedule above for a breakdown of each day or session.

Does my child need prior mountain biking experience?

Nope! As long as your child is confident riding a bike. From first-time MTBers to kids that are already hitting kickers, our coach aims to meet each rider where they’re at.

What skill level does my child need?

Yours child should be comfortable riding a bike unsupported on Grade 2 MTB trails.

Per NZ Cycle Trails, a Grade 2 is defined as: Suitable for most riders, including beginners, occasional cyclists and families with limited cycling experience. A multi-geared bike with medium to wide knobbly tyres is recommended.

Off-road trails are usually wide and smooth with some gentle hills.

What ages can join Term Programs or Ride Camps?

At the moment, we are welcoming kids aged 8-13 year olds to join us for our current Term Programs or Ride Camps.

Please note we do plan to open spots for other age ranges in the future.

Who’s the Lead Coach?

All coaching is led by Mike Brown, Operations team member at Bike Glendhu and a BICP-certified instructor, trained under the Bike Instructor Certification Program, the global standard for MTB skills coaching.

Mike brings over a decade of international experience developing mountain bike coaching programs, bike schools, and skills clinics. From running school holiday ride camps in Central America to leading the Crankworx Kids Program in Northern Australia, Mike has spent years helping young riders develop skills on their bikes.

With BG Bike School’s coaching programs, kids don’t just learn to ride better; they learn to back themselves, connect with others, and discover the joy of pushing their own limits.
