News: Craigs Investment Partners Bridges The Gap At Bike Glendhu

Bike Glendhu’s 2025 season has officially opened with a crucial new piece of infrastructure – a pair of bridges funded by Craigs Investment Partners, connecting the trail network across the Fern Burn and creating a safer, more sustainable riding experience for all.

The bridges, located on Kakariki Up and on the return to Base 334, replace an older section of trail that had been threatened by repeated slips and wash-outs – most recently giving way during the heavy rain earlier in October. The new structures divert riders away from the hazardous area entirely, which ultimately allowed the park to reopen on schedule this season.

“These bridges couldn’t have come at a better time,” says Kelsi Mackay, Bike Glendhu General Manager. “The same storm system that caused further slips along the original track really highlighted how vital this project was. Without the new bridges in place, we might not have been able to open the park on time this season.”

The project was made possible thanks to the support of Craigs Investment Partners, who funded the bridge construction as part of their commitment to backing local initiatives that enhance community wellbeing and outdoor activity.

“Craigs are proud to support Bike Glendhu. This is an incredible facility and a true asset to the local community,” says the Wanaka Craigs team, Haley Van Leeuwen, Aaron Shearer and Paul Gardner. “Our shared commitment to innovation and community values makes for a strong and enduring partnership. We believe in backing initiatives that inspire people to connect with nature, stay active, and build vibrant regional hubs.”

The new bridges improve the overall flow of the trail network, creating a more seamless connection between the Base area and the mountain bike trails. Riders will now enjoy a smoother transition between flat sections along the river into the beginning of the climb, as well as cut time off their route back to Base and the carpark. The park’s environmental impact is also reduced by avoiding erosion-prone terrain.

“This project really embodies our vision for Bike Glendhu – thoughtful development that balances accessibility, sustainability and fun,” says Mackay. “We’re incredible grateful to Craigs for sharing in that vision and helping us future-proof the park.”

Bike Glendhu encourages riders to come out to ride the new route this season and to support local businesses that, like Craigs Investment Partners, make accessing the outdoors in Wanaka better for everyone.
